Pumice
Pumice is an excellent growing medium. It allows oxygen, water, and nutrients to naturally travel throughout plant root systems and maintains a reserve of nutrients stored in microscopic holes.
Pumice is ideal for succulents and cacti as it dramatically increases water retention in sandy or clay soil, allowing efficient distribution of nutrients and liquids. Additionally, pumice prevents soil erosion and protects roots from surface exposure. Its neutral pH level makes it suitable for any plant or growing conditions.
This material is excellent for rooting plant cuttings, helping avoid root rot.
How to use:
- To amend soils:
- Add 1/2 cup of pumice for every 2 cups of dense soil, or as needed, to improve soil airflow and complexion and reduce the risk of root rot.
- To root cuttings: pumice works particularly well for plants that rot quickly after attempting to propagate, such as cacti and succulent plants.
- Take a succulent's stem or leaf cutting, dip it in rooting hormone (optional), fill a container with about 1 inch of pumice, and add enough water so that the pumice begins to float. Place the cutting in the pumice and ensure it doesn't completely dry out by adding water.
Other uses:
- Add a layer at the bottom of planters to reduce the risk of root rot, especially if your planter doesn't have a drainage hole.
- Use as a top dressing for your succulents or cacti plants.
Notes: Rinse pumice before using and store it in a dry place.
Sizes:
- 3 Liters: enough to fill 5 (4-inch) nursery pots and 1 (6-inch) nursery pot.
- 7 Liters: enough to fill 6 (4-inch) and 5 (6-inch) nursery pots.
