From Passion to Purpose
The Journey Behind Maya
Seven years ago, I embarked on a journey that would change my life and the way I saw the world. I founded my first business, JustPlants, with a simple mission: to bring the beauty of nature into people's homes. What started as a small plant-selling business soon blossomed into a full-service company offering plant installations and maintenance. However, as I worked with clients, I stumbled upon a significant issue that would shape the future of my business and my personal mission: traditional soil was failing our plants. The soil, composed mostly of peat moss, was causing overwatering and lacked the necessary nutrients. This not only affected the health of our plants but also had a damaging environmental impact, as peat is harvested from fragile ecosystems.

Determined to find a solution, I began experimenting and researching eco-friendly alternatives. I discovered coco husk, a sustainable byproduct that provides excellent aeration for plant roots and prevents overwatering. Nonetheless, I wanted to go further and create soil that nourished plants effectively, which led me to worm castings. These nutrient-rich natural fertilizers promote plant growth and help reduce food waste by using locally sourced worm castings from worms-fed food waste.

This sustainable approach inspired me to launch Maya Growing Mediums in late 2022 as a closed-loop system, turning waste into valuable plant resources while supporting local agriculture. My journey from selling plants to developing sustainable soil has shown me that even small changes, when made collectively, can significantly impact the environment. At Maya Growing Mediums, we are committed to nurturing not only plants but the environment as well.
